Our New Curriculum

  Poulner Junior School

Developing our Curriculum
In May 2006, at Poulner Junior School we began a 'roots and all' development of our curriculum. Our aim is to create an inspirational integrated curriculum to emotionally engage our learners and make learning more effective.

Our Learning Values
The curriculum is underpinned by 5 learning values. These are the core learning values that we consider it crucial to develop in all of our learners. The values make up our school policy for learning. Click on the links below to view each one.

Integrated Learning Units
We set about creating 'Integrated Learning Units' to run across Key Stage 2. We trialled several in each year group in 2006-2007. In 2007-2008 we have now implemented Integrated Learning Units across all terms in all year groups.

Initially we developed the Thinking learning value. As part of this we taught the children to use and choose from a variety of thinking tools.

An Integrated Learning Unit is Driven by 2 learning values and supports the coverage of 2-3 National curriculum subjects. The unit starts with a 'hook' (an inspiring introduction to foster emotional involvement in their learning for our children).

The teaching and learning is all directly related to an 'outcome' at the end of the unit. The outcome draws on the learning that has taken place and 'resolves' issues that were raised in the hook.

Year 3 test their buggies in the 'May the force be with you' Outcome

Year 4 children prepare healthy snacks to sell, making money to subsidise a school trip in their learning unit 'Money, Money, Money'.

Outcomes can take a variety of forms, but often include a demonstration, exhibition or a performance that parents are invited to attend.

Home Learning
In addition we now set home learning, this replaces our homework to better support the learning taking place in school. It now consists of a project to be completed at home over several weeks click here to find out more.

We also have a theme week each term. For this, the children are vertically grouped (children from all four year groups in each newly created class). The the learning is all based around a common theme.

Recent theme weeks have included a multicultural theme week and
Poulner Junior School Olympics theme week. (Click to see photos)
