Dear Parents WELCOME TO POULNER JUNIOR SCHOOL. On behalf of the staff and governors of Poulner Junior School, I should like to extend a very warm welcome to you and your children.
During the next four years we hope that the special atmosphere and ethos we aim to provide at Poulner Junior School will enable your children to develop into learners that are excited by each new day and who become responsible members of society. We hope to build their independence and through a new, innovative curriculum we have developed, ensure that the highest standards of learning are achieved and that their four years at Poulner are memorable and relevant to their lives.
Throughout your child’s time at Poulner we hope you will join with us as partners in the education process, so that together we can achieve our goals.
I hope you find the information contained within this booklet helpful, and that you and your family enjoy and benefit from your association with Poulner Junior School. If you have any concerns at any time please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss these with us.
Yours sincerely Beverly Levett Headteacher
LETTER FROM CHAIRMAN OF GOVERNORS
July 2009
Dear Parents
Government legislation demands that State Schools should have a Board of Governors to oversee the good management of the School. This has been the case for many years. The Governing Body must reflect the local community and should comprise of representatives from Local Government, Parents, Teachers and others with appropriate experience.
Governors responsibilities have increased considerably as they now have to think about-
* Curriculum * Finance * Site and building management * Staffing and Pay * The school's image
Poulner enjoys a dedicated and committed Governing Body who has an excellent relationship with the Headteacher and her staff. There are regular Governors' Meetings, whilst the day-to-day well-being of the school and its management are monitored and guided via a series of committees who meet at frequent intervals.
It is important that Parents understand the role that Governors now play in running their school and that the Chair of Governors and Governing Body in general are available to respond to questions, suggestions and complaints. Approaches to the Governors may be made through the Headteacher via the school office.
The aims of Poulner Governors are the well-being of the pupils coupled with the highest possible academic and pastoral standards, all in an environment conducive to learning and with a staff who are well-motivated and enthusiastic.
In October 2007 the School was inspected under the OFSTED scheme, a mandatory event that occurs every few years. The official findings of that report are available on the school website www.poulner-jun.hants.sch.uk. The School was judged to be good with outstanding features.
Colin Bull CHAIRMAN OF GOVERNORS
OUR SCHOOL SCHOOL ETHOS AND EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE SCHOOL
The ‘ethos’ or ‘characteristic spirit’ of a school is very important but not easy to define. At Poulner we feel that it is epitomised by the relationships and purposeful teamwork shared by all staff and children, resulting in a warm and welcoming environment where children can learn and grow in confidence.
As a result we hope that our children will achieve the following general aims during their time at Poulner Junior School.
GENERAL AIMS: To help pupils to
THE CURRICULUM AND SCHOOL ORGANISATION
HOW CHILDREN LEARN There are 5 Learning values and these underpin how our curriculum develops . Our 5 key values are:
We have thought about our vision, what each looks like, what we will see in the classroom and how we will know each is happening. All children at Poulner Junior School follow the National Curriculum which is taught through about 8 Learning Units each year. Some subjects will be taught discreetly. All children learn French.
All units start with a Hook which interests the children from the start. This could be an event, a letter, a problem, a visitor drama etc. Three main subjects are taught which link together and some subjects are taught discreetly. At the end of the Unit, the outcome is very important as this is the purpose for learning. You will be a crucial part for some of the outcomes so we hope you can join with us in celebrating your children’s achievements. Home Learning. Linked to each Unit will be a piece of learning to be completed at home. We encourage you to take an interest in this BUT not to complete it for your child. It spans a few weeks to give the child the flexibility of when they complete it. The teachers operate “surgeries” for children who need extra guidance. The Home Learning instructions are clearly laid out and sent home. The Home Learning supports what the children are learning in the classroom. Also accompanying the Unit you will receive a Parent Information sheet which tells you all about the subjects and content of what the children will be learning.
Collective Worship – Collective worship is held regularly. A range of topics are covered and led by members of staff and occasionally, visitors. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Collective Worship, any requests to do so should be put in writing to the Headteacher, who will make alternative arrangements for children during these times
Religious Education – Religious Education is taught throughout the school. The school is required to teach Christianity and two other major world faiths – and to fulfil this Judaism is taught in Years 3 and 4, Islam in Years 5 and 6 and Christianity in all year groups. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education, any requests to do so should be put in writing to the Headteacher. Sex EducationThis will be taught through Units, as part of the statutory Science curriculum and also as part of our Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum. Parents will be informed in advance of any specific programmes of sex education and staff involved will be happy to discuss the content and support materials/videos to be used. CHILDREN REQUIRING LEARNING SUPPORT A child has Special Educational Needs if they have a learning difficulty, behaviour difficulty or mental/physical disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. Following the Admission Policy and Governors Policy on pupils with SEN, no child will be disadvantaged when considered for admission, because of his or her special needs, including children with disabilities. The Accessibility Plan lays out the details of how any shortfalls in the school which could potentially disadvantage disabled pupils, will be addressed The education of children requiring learning support is seen as a partnership between the parents, child, school and outside agencies are in regular contact with Child Health, Educational Welfare, and the Educational Psychology service.
Pastoral Care and Discipline This is first and foremost the responsibility of the class teacher and it is the class teacher that your child should turn to if they have any problems. Children are expected to follow the School Ethos values and will be reminded of these expectations by their teacher in the case of minor breaches of discipline. When necessary, the year leader may also be involved and then the Deputy and finally the Head. At this stage she may call you in for a discussion about acceptable ways forward.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The school offers a variety of lunchtime and after school clubs depending on staff availability. These are offered to both girls and boys and currently include the following:

All children in Year 4 have the opportunity to learn 3 musical instruments in the year. Visits Year 5 visit Linford Bottom.
Throughout the year the children will undertake a variety of visits to support their curriculum studies. In 2008, 43 children from Year 4 spent an action-packed week at Stubbington. In 2010 another 60 will visit.
Calshot. In 2009, 70 Year 6 children had an action packed week at Calshot Activities centre. Here they sail, canoe, climb, abseil, problem solve, shoot and learn archery. ALONGSIDE these activities our Year 6 pupils have daily opportunities to act as monitors, when they undertake a wide variety of jobs, such as running the school shop, acting as class monitors, answering the office telephone during the lunch hour, as well as delivering registers/letters, the daily news bulletin and operating our playtime Friendship Patrol.
The Building. Poulner Junior School was built in 1968 and has twelve classroom areas with three classes per year group. All children enjoy using the library weekly and our librarian helps the children make appropriate choices and get the most from this valuable resource. It also houses many of the teacher’s resources.
Our computer suite for pupils has undergone a face-lift in August 2008 where there are now be 18 new fast PC,s, an Interactive whiteboard and software which enables the teachers to individually monitor children’s work whilst they are on-line anywhere in the school. There are also 16 networked laptops upstairs and 16 downstairs to allow flexibility and all 12 classrooms will have Interactive whiteboards. Each child will have their own e-mail address. From 2009 the school will have its own VLE (virtual Learning Environment) where parents and children will be able to access lots of things to do with school, from home.
Our hall is equipped with modern stage lighting. Our kitchens are recently refurbished, and our administrative offices are newly designed where our welcoming staff is able to deal with most queries.
Poulner has extensive playing fields used by the children during fine weather for PE and playtimes. A new outside classroom has just been erected and School Council have designed the new £12,000 play trail and low level climbing wall.
Pond and Environmental Area This resource is now used by all of the Poulner children and the opportunities that it provides for practical activities supports a wide range of curriculum areas. Mrs White runs the Trailblazers, a club which helps children look after their environment and the children will be taking a special interest in this area.
Swimming Pool. We are fortunate to have an outdoor pool and changing rooms. All children take part in swimming from June to September, weather permitting. Children are required to wear a hat which can be purchased from the school office
Community Room. We use this room for our music lessons. Currently 27% of children learn to play an instrument but the whole of year 4 will have the exciting opportunity to learn 3 instruments throughout the year for no cost.
This also houses Poulner Freetime, a facility for looking after children after school and during holidays and Inset Days. It is privately run so enquiries should be made direct. There is a charge. This room can also be hired for private functions. Contact the school office for details. STAFF AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES CHARGES As from that date any activity organised for children within school time must be available to all pupils within a school and not be dependent on the parents' ability to pay. When residential activities are organised, in support of National Curriculum syllabus only the costs for board and lodging may be charged. However, families in receipt of Family Income Supplement may also claim exemption from these charges. An exception to this is when a residential visit is organised outside of school hours or is not connected with any prescribed examination. Schools may, however, INVITE parents to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of a trip, visit, etc., and depending upon the parental response to support the activity make a decision as to whether or not to organise it.
SCHOOL JOURNEY INSURANCE Hampshire County Council has negotiated insurance cover for all children and adults taking part in school journeys. Parents wishing to view the policy may do so on request to the school office.
PARENT/TEACHER ASSOCIATION The PTA purchased a minibus which makes life easier to get to matches and keeps the cost down on local visits
All parents automatically become PTA members when their children start school. The role of the PTA committee is two-fold. It provides a communication link between parents and the school and also provides financial support to the school by organising fund-raising events Recently, PTA funds have financed our fabulous minibus. Active parental support is vital to the well being of the school. Help is always required. Please do support us whenever you can. RESULTS 2009The following table shows the percentage of children at Poulner Junior School who achieved Levels 4 or 5 in the three core subjects:
Level 4
Level 5
In 2010 Year 6 will not take Science SATS. GENERAL INFORMATION MEDICINE IN SCHOOL If your child has to take medicine as part of a course prescribed by a doctor, please send it to school clearly named, and with written instructions. It should be brought to the school office first thing in the morning for safe keeping and we will ask you to fill in a form giving us permission to administer it, if you wish us to do so. We cannot administer medicines not prescribed by a doctor. ALLERGIES CAUSING ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK Nuts, especially peanuts (sometimes wasp and bee stings or eggs) can be a cause of a severe allergic reaction causing anaphylactic shock. This is potentially life threatening. At Poulner Junior School we have a ‘NO NUT’ POLICY and would therefore be grateful if parents would ensure that their children do not bring any foods that contain nuts or nut additives.
SWEETS Under normal circumstances children are not allowed to eat sweets on school premises. They are, however, permitted to eat healthy snacks of fresh fruit/vegetables during playtimes.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL/ATTENDANCE If your child is ill, please notify the office by telephone and leave a message or send a letter with your child when he/she returns to school. We would also appreciate prior notice of an appointment with the doctor or dentist. Please do not send your child to school if he/she is ill or too soon after recovering from an illness.
EXCLUSION FROM PE If you wish your child to be excluded from PE or games for medical reasons, please send a note to the class teacher explaining circumstances. PE is an essential part of the National Curriculum and all children are expected to participate. Please always make sure they have a named PE kit.
VALUABLES/JEWELLERY Jewellery or valuable articles should not be worn or brought to school. For reasons of safety, girls/boys with pierced ears should only wear ONE PAIR of studs at school. However, these will need to be removed for ALL PE and Games activities. Newly pierced ears will need to be taped over for PE and swimming will not be allowed. BICYCLES From this September children from Year 4 upwards riding to school will need a cycle permit and must be committed to undertaking training. Compliments and complaints But sometimes things may not go well. For example, you may feel that your child is being bullied and are not happy that the right things have been done to address this. We hope that good communication would solve such a problem. Our aim is that by careful listening, constructive discussion and sensible actions we can work together to solve problems, and so improve our school systems further. But if the problem persists you may wish to make a complaint.
When should I complain?
Whom do I contact? Certain specific complaints (e.g. about school admissions) are dealt with separately. Staff at the school or the local authority can advise you about where to direct your complaint .
What if the matter is still unresolved? After trying all other avenues, you may decide to make a formal complaint to the governing body by sending a letter to the clerk to the governors at the school address. The governors will investigate and may invite you to meet them to discuss your concerns. If you are still dissatisfied, after an investigation by the governing body, you may appeal to the local authority. In cases where you believe that the school has acted unlawfully or unreasonably, or failed to fulfil a statutory duty, you can take your complaint to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills. If you want further information or support I recommend Parentline Plus to you as a source of information and advice (telephone: 0808 800 2222). All this looks very formal, but very few problems have to go through such steps because we work hard to understand and resolve problems as quickly as possible. In this way pupils of the school get the best possible chance to succeed in their learning. Yours sincerely, Colin
Bull , Chair of Governors.
